Karen Morant, Board Chair
Karen Holmes Morant has worked for more than 25 years in city and county governments as a public servant, and currently provides leadership in Wake County Government as a Consultant and Life Coach, focusing on facilitating personal transformation, organizational change, systems and programs improvement processes and developing community partnerships.
Karen earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Frostburg University, a master’s in Organizational Change and Leadership from Pfeiffer University, and certifications from Johns Hopkins University’s Leadership Development and Fellows in Change Management programs.
She has been involved with The Encouraging Place since 2010, through Summer Camp for Women serving meals at camps in Raleigh and Durham and Summer Camps had an impact on her growth. In talking with Reggie, she heard her heart. She sees that transitional wrestling for the ministry and wants to help sustain the old programs while giving life and birth to the new programs.
Karen has been on the Board and has served as Chair for the last 3 years.
Carmen Cauthen is a Raleigh native. She was introduced to The Encouraging Place many years ago, when the director of her children’s summer camp invited her to attend the ladies summer camp. She has been actively involved as a camper and volunteer ever since.
She graduated from NCSU with a B.A. in Political Science and has done additional study at NCSU and Georgia Tech. Retired from the NC General Assembly in 2011, her time has been spent actively serving The Encouraging Place.
Carmen knows that The Encouraging Place has a major work to do for the Lord. She is excited to be a part of this work.
Alice Fowler has been involved with The Encouraging Place since being invited to a summer camp by her sister in law. When she was invited, she didn’t know how broken she was. She wants to stay involved as she has grown over the last 8 years.
She works in banking and handles the Summer Camp for Women finances each year. She is happy to use the areas of expertise that God has given to her.
She believes in the vision that Reggie has and feels sorry for those who don’t embrace it. Her prayer is to let others see the Encouraging Place.
Rene McDuffy Harris is originally from Chester, Pennsylvania. She has been involved with Summer Camp for Women and Sistershare as both a camper and a leader since retiring to North Carolina.
During her professional life, she was involved with a community action agency. Rene spent 19 years in a non-profit working in a shelter system with women coming off of the streets.
Ms. Harris likes to love the people where they are, draw people in and find their potential.
Bettie Murchison is a friend of founder, Reggie Edwards, and The Encouraging Place. She is a willing and hardworking supporter of the ministry.
She is a facilitator, trainer, speaker, and consultant. Bettie is a national trainer and consultant for The Nurturing Parent program. Her expertise is in many areas, including being the Principal Consultant for the North Carolina Rosenwald Schools Coalition. She has spent 25 years working with non-profits and has founded two non-profits.
Bettie received her B.A. in Political Science/Criminal Justice from NCSU; has a Certificate in Nonprofit Management and is working on a Masters in Liberal Studies from Duke University.
Natarsha Sanders has known Reggie since she was a baby and has had the opportunity to witness this work from childhood to adulthood. She has been blessed by The Encouraging Place over time, in the community, with women and children.
She is a teacher, receiving her B.S. in Philosophy from Hollins University and her M.Ed. in Special Education and Teaching from North Carolina Central University. Her concentration was in behavioral and emotional disabilities with a specialty in Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The Lord has let her know that it is time to operate in her gifts and learn and grow as she walks alongside this ministry. She hopes to be able to partake in the learning and growing process to edify God’s Kingdom.
